Getting Started: Making Deposits and Withdraws

A Player's Options in the Current Online Poker Atmosphere

Making deposits and withdraws to and from online poker sites may have been easier in the past for U.S. players before the Federal Government begun its assault on online gambling, but there are still several ways for players to fund and cash out from their online poker accounts.

All sites active in the U.S. allow players to deposit money using Visa and MasterCard, and some even offer the option of using cards like Dinners Card International. Although most credit cards work, some credit card companies and banks that issue debit cards won’t allow transactions with online poker sites, so sometimes using the cards is a matter of trial and error.

Poker sites are also unable to return funds to the credit cards when it’s time to cash out. Players will have to have the sites send a check in their name through the mail, which can take a week or two. Depending on the site, withdraws larger than $1,000 usually are sent using an overnight mailing service.

Most people who deposit and withdraw regularly use eWallets, which are companies that are used to transfer money from player’s bank accounts into their favorite poker sites. NETELLER used to be the biggest and most trusted eWallet, but the company decided to leave the U.S. after its two founders were charged with crimes related to online gambling earlier this year.

But NETELLER wasn’t the only eWallet company out there, and all online poker sites offer at least one eWallet option to its players. Several eWallets are ePassporte, MyWebATM and Click2Pay.

Although all eWallets have different procedures to use them, they basically all work this way: Players create an account at the eWallet site and then load dollars from either their credit cards or directly from their bank accounts. It takes several days to set up a bank account.

After money is loaded into the preferred site, players then transfer it over to their poker sites through the deposit methods. Withdrawing from these sometimes requires players to have an actual credit card sent to them from the eWallet, which can be used for purchases and at ATMs. eWallets will also mail checks, and some will return funds directly into the player’s bank account, which usually takes about three business days.

If a player has any questions or is having difficulty making withdraws or deposits, they should contact the poker room directly for help.
