Construction began this week on the Tropicana-branded casino in Evansville, Ind. The casino, which will be moving onto land and situated in the city’s downtown, will be the first of its kind for the state, which has up until this point had riverboat casinos.

According to Tristatehomepage.com, the facility will have 75,000 feet of gaming and non-gaming amenities. The cost of the project is $50 million. The casino is expected to open in late 2017.

The move onto land was allowed by a law enacted by the legislature this year.

The new facility is expected to be completed in December 2017. The riverboat casino that it will replace has been in operation since 1995, according to the Associated Press.

Indiana’s commercial casino industry had total gaming win of $2.13 billion in 2015, which was the lowest it has been since 2009. Ohio opened casinos in 2012, and that had a major impact on Indiana gaming. Ohio’s gambling market has grown every year since it launched.
