The centerpiece of the 2016 Monte-Carlo One Drop Extravaganza will undeniably be the €1,000,000 buy-in Big One For One Drop, which will surpass the prior $1 million events and set the record as the largest buy-in poker tournament in history. But this event is far from the only exciting thing going down in Monaco. The festival is set to run from October 13-17 at the Casino De Monte-Carlo and will feature not only the ‘Big One’ but also eight other high roller tournaments with buy-ins ranging from €10,000 to €100,000 as well as a selection of high stakes cash games. As has been the case with all prior One Drop poker events, the proceeds from this festival will go to the One Drop Foundation and their efforts to provide access to safe water around the globe.
Notable events throughout the festival include a €25,000 no-limit hold’em high roller beginning at 2 p.m. local time on Oct. 15, a €50,000 heads-up no-limit hold’em event beginning at 5 p.m on Oct. 16 and a €1,000,000 buy-in high roller cash game beginning at noon on Oct. 17. The marquee unlimited re-entry €1,000,000 buy-in will run over three days, beginning at 2 p.m. on Oct. 14.
The event follows One Drop’s $1 million buy-in tournaments at the WSOP, which were held in 2012 and 2014. On alternating years starting in 2013 the have a six-figure One Drop high roller has taken the place of the seven-figure ‘Big One.’ Poker pro Antonio Esfandiari won the first iteration of the million-dollar tournament for $18,346,673, while high-stakes online grinder Dan Colman was the champion in the 2014 event for $15,306,668.
“While both of these [prior] events were primarily contested by professional poker players, The Big One for One Drop Invitational will be a by-invitation-only tournament for businessmen, philanthropic and celebrity recreational players,” a press release said.
“From the beginning, we knew that The Big One for One Drop was a unique event,” said high-stakes poker player and billionaire businessman Guy Laliberté, who founded One Drop. “This year, by shifting the focus to recreational players, we’re looking to bring fun and innovation to charitable giving. We believe the events in Monaco will attract high net-worth individuals from across the globe to enjoy the game, the networking opportunities and the incredible VIP experiences only available in one of the world’s most iconic settings.”
Throughout the festival there will be many cash games on offer, with games beginning each day at noon and concluding for the night at 6 a.m. No-Limit hold’em, pot-limit Omaha, mixed-games and open-faced Chinese poker varieties are all on offer with limits ranging from €25 – €25 all the way up to €1,000 – €2,000 for the big-bet games.
