Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts is eyeing a renewed effort to convince the state of Georgia to allow it to build a $1 billion casino in the Atlanta area, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
On Monday, MGM CEO Jim Murren was in Atlanta to tell local business and civic leaders that casino gambling would be a great benefit to the state’s economy, as well as a new source of tax revenue that could help fund education.
MGM first pitched the casino in summer 2015, but it would need a law change.
Earlier this year, lawmakers were considering a proposed constitutional amendment that would all up to four casinos, two of which would be in Atlanta.
However, the idea was opposed by Gov. Nathan Deal.
According to Murren, Georgians spend $600 million a year at out-of-state casinos. Forty U.S. states have casinos, and the casino operator is lobbying for the Peach State to join the list.
“[Atlanta] is a tremendously appealing market,” Murren said Monday.
