Televangelist: Chess More Sinful Than GamblingTurkish Chess Federation Files Lawsuit Over Claims |

A Muslim televangelist in Turkey apparently sees strategy games with a huge skill component as being worse for people than something like the lottery.
According to reports, Ahmet Mahmut Ünlü denounced the game when speaking earlier this month. His comments reportedly prompted the Turkish Chess Federation to file a lawsuit.
“Playing chess is worse than gambling and eating pork. People who play chess are more prone to lying than others," he said. "People who play chess may not say the shahada [declaration of Islamic belief] while they are dying. People who play chess are cursed … You should count your prayer beads instead of playing games like this.”
“The remarks of the person in question on chess in a video are unacceptable and have drawn a reaction from our community" the Federation said in a statement.
It’s safe to assume by gambling he didn’t mean poker, which has more in common with chess than say a slot machine or a purely random game of chance. However, research has shown that “solving” heads-up no-limit hold’em is way more difficult than the centuries-old board game.
