State Senators Debating Measure This Week

A bill in Virginia that would allow poker tournaments has cleared a few Senate votes this week and appears poised to move to the House for consideration.

It was introduced only two weeks ago.

The legislation would classify poker as a game of skill and exempt certain games from the state’s illegal gambling laws, though it won’t lead to Las Vegas-style casinos in the historically anti-gambling state.

The bill allows a “qualified organization” to conduct poker tournaments as part of its charitable gaming activities. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Charitable Gaming Board would regulate the poker tournaments, according to the bill.

Virginia has a long history of being anti-poker, so the bill is good news for poker players there. In neighboring Maryland last year, lawmakers passed a bill making poker home games legal.
