Apparently not much has changed for Major League Baseball over the past two years with regards to the issue of sports betting.
In early 2015, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said “it’s important for baseball to give fresh consideration to the issue.” On Wednesday, Manfred reiterated that the league was still unsure about federally regulated sports betting, Yahoo Finance reported.
“There is this buzz out there in terms of people feeling that there may be an opportunity here for additional legalized sports betting,” Manfred said this week. “We are re-examining our stance on gambling. It’s a conversation that’s ongoing with the owners.”
Traditional sports betting is only legal in Nevada. A bill was recently introduced into Congress that would allow other states to have sports books at casinos.
According to the casino industry, about $150 billion is bet on sports each year in America, with only a small portion coming from Nevada sports books.
The NBA has said that it’s on board with a federal sports betting regime, while the NFL has not changed its anti-gambling stance, claiming that it “has an impact on the integrity of our game.”
