Canadian poker pro Griffin Benger has topped a record field of 1,129 entrants to win the 2017 Irish Poker Open €1,150 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event, capturing the historic title and the top prize of €200,000 ($212,000 USD). The sizable turnout built a total prizepool of €1,128,295 that was split amongst the top 135 finishers at the event, which was held at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, Ireland.

Benger, a former professional gamer, has made a living at poker for several years now. This is his second biggest title run, having won the 2013 European Poker Tour Berlin high roller event for $562,343. His largest tournament score came last year, when he finished seventh in the 2016 World Series of Poker main event for $1,250,190. Benger got a lot of television coverage during that tournament, especially for the hands he played against the talkative and polarizing William Kassouf. Now he has won one of Europe’s most historic and prestigious poker titles.

“Incredibly humbled and grateful to win the oldest tournament in Europe, home to so many close friends,” said Benger after it was all over. "Thanks for all the support, it means the world.”
