Shai Zurr defeated a field of 1,413 players to win the 2017 World Series of Poker $1,000 no-limit hold’em event with 30-minute levels. For the win the 34-year-old from Petach Tikva, Israel. The fast-paced event played down to a champion in just two days of action, with the 27 players who made day 2 narrowed down to just one in less than five hours of play.

“I am so happy to join the bracelet-winner family and also the Israeli bracelet-winner family,” Zurr told WSOP reporters after the event wrapped up.

Zurr was the second player to win a bracelet from Israel this summer, with Ben Maya having won the $1,500 no-limit hold’em shootout in late June. Zurr is only the eighth player from his home country to win a title at the WSOP.

Zurr came into the final day of this event in 16th chip position with 27 remaining. Eight players were eliminated in the first 30-minute level of the day, and five more were gone in the next level. With only an hour off the clock the event was down to 14 players. Zurr survived down to short handed action, and with three players remaining he was the shortest stack. He was able to close the gap a bit, and then eliminated American poker pro Alex Foxen in third place ($98,761) to set up a heads-up showdown with Ognjen Sekularac.

With that Zurr had taken the lead, holding 3.7 million in chips to Sekularac’s 3.3 million. Heads-up lasted only seven hands. Zurr was able to extend his lead to a 2.5-to-1 advantage by the time the final hand arose. With blinds of 40,000-80,000 and an ante of 10,000 Sekularac limped from button and Zurr raised to 330,000. Sekularac moved all in for roughly 2 million and Zurr quickly called with the ADiamond SuitQClub Suit. Sekularac was domianted with his ASpade Suit2Spade Suit. The board ran out KDiamond Suit10Diamond Suit7Diamond Suit9Spade SuitJClub Suit to give Zurr the broadway straight, winning him the pot and the title. Sekularac earned $137,909 as the runner-up.
