Las Vegas' Airport Sees Record Travel In June

Nearly 4.2 million people flew into Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport in June, the best June ever for the city, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The total number of passengers was 1.5 percent better than June 2016’s 4.13 million. As noted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 3.8 million of those travelers were on domestic flights (1.9 percent year-over-year increase), while nearly 310,000 were from international flights (1.7 percent decline). Not all those passengers counted as visitors, though.

The authority said there were 3.6 million people in total who visited Las Vegas during the month, a small dip of about two percent compared to June 2016’s 3.68 million. Citywide room occupancy of 92.6 percent during the month was nearly unchanged year-over-year.

There were 21.18 million visitors through the first six months of 2017.

The average daily auto traffic on all major highways in the city was 126,000, up more than a percent year-over-year, though traffic at the Nevada/California border was down a percent.

The annual World Series of Poker is a major draw for the city during the summer. The poker festival kicked off in late May and ended in mid-July.

The WSOP set a participation record in 2017 with 120,995 total entries. There were a record 74 tournaments on the schedule this year, paying out an all-time high $231 million in prize money. The number of entries (not unique players) was up 12.2 percent year-over-year. The WSOP also said that a record 111 countries were represented this year. The $10,000 buy-in main event drew 7,221 players, the third largest in WSOP history.

Players from California accounted for 16 percent of WSOP participation this year.

Nevada cash game poker revenue during the month was $16.67 million, according to figures from state gaming regulators. The amount was a 3.3 percent increase year-over-year and the top performing June for the Nevada poker market since the $17.66 million in June 2007.
