As Floridians brace for Hurricane Irma’s arrival this weekend, poker rooms across the state, especially in South Florida, are making plans to close until the historic storm passes.
There are a dozen card rooms in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area, which will likely be hit by the hurricane early Sunday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.
On Wednesday the Seminole Hard Hotel & Casino Hollywood said on its website that poker tournaments and its Big Game Full House Drawing promotion will be cancelled beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. until further notice. Cash games will continue for now, the casino said, but will be suspended at 6 p.m. Friday. The property has about three dozen tables.
The 33-table poker room at the Hialeah Park Casino near Miami told Card Player that it will be closed from 3 a.m. Friday to at least Sunday, depending on the impact of the storm. It’s canceling its regularly scheduled Monday tournament as well.
Miami’s Magic City Casino, equipped with 19 tables, will be closing Friday at 8 p.m. until further notice, but there are plans to reopen Monday. The Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach plans to cease poker games late Friday evening and will “play it by ear” on when to reopen for business. The PBKC poker room has 64 tables.
The final stretch of a WPTDeepStacks stop at the Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee near Fort Myers was canceled “in the interest of public safety,” according to a statement from the World Poker Tour’s website. The festival was scheduled to run until Sept. 10. The entire poker room at the casino will be closed for the weekend.
The storm isn’t only affecting rooms near the south end of the Florida peninsula. The 70 table room at bestbet Jacksonville will also be closing for the weekend. The racino said that poker games will stop at 6 p.m. Friday and could resume on Tuesday, as long as there isn’t any further delay caused by Irma. The storm is expected to be in South Carolina by Tuesday.
In addition to the card room closings, the racinos will also be suspending live racing.
