Bingo over the internet is more than 20 years old now, but the migration to the web for players continues over in the United Kingdom.
The U.K., which posses one of the oldest and largest online gambling industries in the world, it witnessing a change in the way people play the game. According to a report from The Sun, 20 percent of bingo players over 55 play online bingo. Bingo is typically played by the elderly.
Over the past 10 years, the U.K. has seen the loss of nearly off its brick-and-mortar bingo halls. The number of locations reportedly is now at around 350, down from nearly 600 a decade ago.
Online bingo is said to have originated back in 1996, and it grew to a $500 million worldwide industry by 2006. It’s a 10-figure market these days.
According to the U.K. Gambling Commission, the source of the Sun report, there was a 14 percent decline in in-person bingo play last year. Bingo saw the greatest decline in people playing in person. Nearly half of British online gamblers play bingo over the web, according to the U.K.
