The 49th annual World Series of Poker is officially here, kicking off Wednesday with the first of a record 78 events on the schedule. Tournament officials are expecting more than 100,000 players this summer from more than 100 countries around the world, being awarded more than $200 million in total prize money.
There are many returning favorites on the schedule, such as the Colossus, Millionaire Maker, Monster Stack, and Crazy Eights, as well as nine brand new events. One of the major changes of note this year is that 12 events are now slated to begin after the start of the $10,000 no-limit hold’em main event, which runs from July 2-14.
Among the events that now begin after the main event is underway are: the $1 million buy-in Big One For One Drop, the $10,000 six-max no-limit hold’em championship event, the $50,000 high roller no-limit hold’em event, and The Closer, a $1,500 no-limit hold’em tournament with 15,000 starting chips and 30-minute levels.

Event start times will remain consistent with the past few years, with most weekday tournaments will getting underway at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m., with weekend events most often starting at 10:00 a.m. and afternoon flights of same events kicking off at 5:00 p.m.
The WSOP also announced that the Big Blind Ante format would be utilized for the first time in bracelet events. In 2018, eight of the 78 bracelets awarded will come from events using the new method, including the $1 million buy-in Big One For One Drop and a number of other no-limit events.
In addition to the bracelet events, two Daily Deepstacks tournament, a variety of Mega Satellites and the recurring $25,000 and $50,000 weekend high roller tournaments held in King’s Lounge will also use the new approach.
