Ohio lawmakers are currently working on a writing legislation to legalize sports betting, according to a report from wdtn.com.
However, there’s currently no timeline for Ohio to enter the sport betting equation. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law that banned traditional sports betting outside of the state of Nevada, prompting many states to make gestures toward sports betting legislation.
“There are no preconceived notions as to what [the sports betting] pathway may look like nor is there a timeline," said Ohio Rep. David Greenspan, who has introduced shell legislation. “We’re not beholden to a timeline to get it done by a certain date, nor are we going to be forced to do something that is not ready.”
“It is the intent of the General Assembly to develop and enact legislation legalizing sports wagering,” reads Greenspan’s bill.
According to the report, lawmakers have expressed interest in working with all the stakeholders in the industries impacted by the change to sports betting law.
The U.S. sports betting market is expected to grow to as much as $6 billion within five years.
