Friday night’s attempted robbery of the Bellagio poker room ended with a shootout between police and the alleged thief as he attempted to steal a getaway car. After being hit in the exchange, the robber was sent to the hospital in critical condition.

On Saturday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the suspect has died as a result of his injuries. In a bizarre twist, however, investigators are now trying to determine if the deceased robber is the very same man who got away with stealing an undisclosed amount of cash from the Bellagio back in November of 2017.

The two heists had remarkably similar strategies, with both involving an armed man targeting the Bellagio poker room cage and the casino’s north valet entrance. Detectives now have to determine if the most recent attempt was a copy cat or the original bandit looking for a repeat score.

The second robbery may have gone smoother for the criminal had there not already been a heavy police presence at Bellagio at the time. Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told ABC News that officers were already on site trying to locate a missing child when they saw the theft taking place on surveillance video.

The suspect’s identity is being withheld by the Clark County coroner until relatives have been notified.
