The inaugural running of the British Poker Open has come to a close. The ten-event high stakes tournament series was held at the Aspers Casino in London, England from September 2-12. The first week of the series featured eight tournaments, with four £10,500 buy-in events and another four that cost £26,000. Check out Card Player’s recap of the early action here.
The final two events of the series were the largest buy-in tournaments on offer. The £52,000 no-limit hold’em event attracted a total of 18 entries to create a prize pool equivalent to $1,089,000 USD. Mikita Badziakouski emerged victorious in the end, earning $588,060 USD for the win.
This was the Belarusian poker pro’s 13th career score of half a million dollars or more, and it brought his lifetime live earnings to $26,009,651. Badziakouski now sits in 15th place on poker’s all-time money list.
In addition to the title and the money, Badziakouski also earned 204 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event. It was his fourth title and eighth final-table finish of the year. As a result, he now sits in 75th place in the 2019 POY race standings, which are sponsored by Global Poker.
The other players to make the money in the event were former Super High Roller Bowl champion Christoph Vogelsang (2nd – $326,700 USD) and 2016 Card Player Player of the Year champion David Peters (3rd – $174,240 USD).
The tenth and final event of a series upped the stakes even further. The £103,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event drew a total of 12 entries to grow the prize pool to $1,452,000 USD. Only the top two finishers made the money, with none other than Mikita Badziakouski being the unfortunate third-place finisher.
Ben Tollerene began heads-up play with just shy of a 3:1 chip lead over Cary Katz. The short stack got off to a strong start, finding two double-ups to close the gap considerably. Katz managed to keep that early momentum going until he held a 2:1 chip lead of his own.
Tollerene regained control by winning a key coin flip with K9 against the 33 of Katz. Tollerene flopped a king and held from there to retake the lead. In the final hand of the event, Tolleren called the all-in from Katz with J10. Katz was ahead for the moment with A6, but the board ran out Q96Q8 to give Tollerene a straight on the river. With that Tollerene secured the pot and the title, earning $1,016,400 USD for the win.
Katz took home $435,600 USD and 200 POY points as the runner-up finisher. This was his 19th final-table score of the year, the most of any player so far in 2019. With two titles and $3,857,126 in year-to-date earnings, Katz now occupies the eighth-place spot on the POY leaderboard.
Sam Soverel was the first-ever winner of the British Poker Open trophy, having won two titles and made five cashes during the span of the 10-event series. Soverel accumulated a total of $954,327 USD in earnings throughout the event.
