In this new "Strip Poker" series, Card Player covers the Las Vegas poker scene - on the Strip and around the city.

The best poker players in the world have many of the same personality traits that help them stay on top of the game. Two of these characteristics are competitiveness and a certain gambling mentality. It is a seamless transition from the felt of a poker table to the greens of a golf course. At the inaugural Doyle Brunson and Dewey Tomko Invitational, there will be fierce competition and millions of dollars hanging on the drop of each shot.

The invitational was modeled after Jack Binion's Professional Gamblers Invitational that ceased to exist a few years ago.

"Dewey and I played in that golf tournament years ago and really enjoyed it. Jack left Las Vegas and the event was no longer happening, so we decided to recreate it," said Doyle Brunson.

There will be two events taking place at the Bali Hai Golf Club in Las Vegas. The first starts Wednesday and is a three-person scramble with three teams of three competing for a $9 million prize pool. The following are the teams:

The second event is a two-person best-ball tournament. It is a $250,000 buy-in that begins on Thursday. The following are the teams:

"Whoever comes the most prepared will probably win. I've been up at 4 or 5 a.m. practicing and playing everyday for the last three weeks so that would probably be me," said four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and 1996 main event champion Huck Seed.

As in poker, many of the pros have much respect for their opponents' talent.

"Huck Seed and David Oppenheimer have a tough team. One thing about Huck is that he's clutch. I have had great experiences with Huck as a partner when he hit some shots we really needed. I just think this is going to be fun," said Phil Hellmuth, current record holder of most WSOP bracelets at eleven.

The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino is the host casino for the invitational where all opening and closing ceremonies take place. Both events are being filmed by ESPN. The first event will premiere on Oct. 21 and the second will air Oct. 28. This is the first stop on the High Stakes Entertainment Golf Tour.

"Daniel and I have been practicing a lot," said partner Erick Lindgren, "These guys are all good, and they're all hustlers!"

With national television coverage, huge amounts of money and pride on the line, and a few of the most notorious gamblers on the poker scene today, the road to two championship teams is sure to be a great display of competition and side bets worth more than most people make in a lifetime.
