The newest upstate New York casino will be built in what used to be a department store in a local strip mall.

According to a report from the Times Union, a newspaper in the Capital Region of the state, construction on the casino will break ground this summer in the Hudson Valley. It is expected to open in early 2022.

The facility itself will be located at the former location of the Bon-Ton department store in the Newburgh Mall. It will provide 90,000 square feet of space for 1,300 video gaming machines and a bar. Traditional table games will not be available.

The new casino will be owned and operated by the Genting Group, an Asian gaming giant that has begun to make waves in the American casino market. The company opened Resorts World Catskills in 2018 and will open Resorts World Las Vegas, the largest casino in the city, later this month.

Their newest property will be called Resorts World Hudson Valley. It will be located 44 miles east of their other New York resort. The absence of physical dealers and traditional table games will make the new
Resorts World more like the MGM-owned Empire City Casino in Yonkers than the other casinos in New York.

Genting said that the new property will employ between 200 and 225 people. It expects to pay the town of Newburgh about $15 million in annual taxes on an expected $160 million in gross gaming revenue.

The announcement of the new upstate casino comes shortly after a move to move up the timeline on New York City casino projects from 2023 to this year was squashed. Government officials in Manhattan were vehemently opposed to the idea, according to a report from the New York Post, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo couldn’t find a way to work around the situation without giving Manhattan special rights.

In March, it was reported that Wynn Resorts, Bally’s Corp and Las Vegas Sands were all competing for a possible New York City gaming license and were lobbying local politicians to get to the front of the line.

However, it’s clear that gambling expansion is a priority in the Empire State as mobile sports betting was approved in April and more brick-and-mortar casinos will pop up in the coming years.
