The 2021 WPT Tampa series at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa, Florida kicked off with a $500 buy-in no-limit hold’em ‘Double Stack’ event. The tournament featured a $1 million guarantee, which was more than doubled when 4,852 entries were made to create a final prize pool of $2,086,360.
In the end, the final four players struck a deal that saw the title and the top payout of $198,287 awarded to Shawn Mohamed.
“I’ve always heard that it was easier to win tournaments in Tampa. It turns out it’s true!” Mohamed told the SHRT blog after the win.
In addition to the title and the money, Momamed was also awarded 660 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event. This was his first POY-qualified score of 2021.
The huge turnout for this event was built over seven starting flights, resulting in the second-largest field in Florida poker history behind only the kickoff event at the 2016 Rock’n’Roll Poker Open at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. That tournament featured a smaller $360 buy-in and attracted 5,018 entries. Rafael Marcondes Reis won $155,644 as the champion in that event.
