The 2021 PokerStars European Poker Tour Open Sochi 133,000 RUB ($1,792 USD) main event drew a record field of 1,210 entries to Casino Sochi. In the end, Evgeniy Starinkov emerged victorious with the title and the top prize of 16,029,300 RUB ($224,410 USD).
This was by far the largest live tournament score of the 26-year-old’s career. The
Stavropol, Russia resident’s previous top payday was the $43,562 USD he earned for a fourth-place finish in a side event at the EPT Sochi festival held this spring.
“I would like to thank my mom, who supported me here during the final table,” Starinkov told PokerStars reporters after the win. “We first watched poker together on TV when I was 14 years old, but I only started playing four years ago.”
The final five players in the event struck a deal that redistributed the remaining prize money, with Henri Toussaint receiving the largest locked-in payout as the chip leader at the time of the agreement. Toussaint ultimately finished as the runner-up, with Starinkov coming out on top in the heads-up battle for the title.
“After the deal, I took it very seriously because I dreamed about winning this trophy,” Starinkov said.
