Minneapolis, MNMinnesota might soon be joining more than 30 other states in the country with legalized sports betting.

According to a report from the Star Tribune, a new proposal has hit the table in Saint Paul that would allow both retail and online wagering within the state.

The bipartisan policy proposal would authorize retail sports betting at tribal casinos and racetracks. Sports betting providers would partner with the tribes to offer gambling services via the internet, computers or mobile devices. Minnesota is home to 40 tribal casinos and two card rooms. Those tribal casinos are home to 20,238 slot machines.

“This is something that people in Minnesota want to see happen — that they’re, quite frankly, traveling across the border to make happen,” said Republican State Sen. Julia Coleman. “This is a win-win scenario for the people of Minnesota and for the state of Minnesota.”

Minnesota would be getting in on the action of a fast growing casino vertical. Sports betting nationwide in 2021 saw $57.22 billion in handle and $4.29 billion in revenue—jumps of 165 percent and 177 percent over 2020, respectively, according to the American Gaming Association.
