MGM Resorts is apparently bullish on gambling becoming legal in Texas.

The Las Vegas-based casino operator announced Monday that it has inked a gambling partnership with the Houston Astros. The marketing relationship is the first of its kind in Texas for MGM, the casino company said.

MGM’s sports betting website and app become the exclusive sportsbook partner of the Major League Baseball team.

There have been some efforts to legalize sports betting in Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court in mid-2018 struck down a federal prohibition on single-game sports betting that applied to all states but Nevada. However, Texas has no commercial casinos, making policy proposals for sports betting even less likely. There’s been little to no progress on it.

Sports betting over the internet is legal and live in neighboring Louisiana, and MGM will look to leverage the Astros relationship to its benefit in the Pelican State. MGM said it plans to offer special Astros-themed promotions to people inside Louisiana.

The MGM online sports betting product become inoperable once a would-be gambler is inside Texas. Geolocation technology ensure compliance.

“The Houston Astros are a monumental addition to our portfolio of strategic partnerships with professional sports teams across the U.S.,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. “The organization’s passionate fan base will be key to the growth of BetMGM throughout the South as we look for new ways to engage fans with unique experiences that go beyond the game.”

Under the agreement, MGM’s sports betting product will get signage at Minute Maid Park, including a permanent outfield wall sign and rotational promo messaging behind home plate.
