Mega Millions Host Reads Wrong Number In $86 Million Jackpot Drawing

The Number 9 Was Mistaken For The Number 6

Drawing via YouTubeThe Mega Millions lottery temporarily suspended some payments from a May 10 drawing after the wrong number was read.

“On May 10, 2022, the host of the Mega Millions drawing incorrectly called the Mega Ball a 6 instead of a 9,” the group said in a statement. “The 9 ball was drawn into the chamber and is the official result. The results of the drawing were audited by Preston CPA.”

Video shows the Mega Ball was a nine, but the number six was stated. It’s unclear if the host made the error or someone relaying the information to the host made the error. At any rate, it might have caused someone to incorrectly think they had won the jackpot worth an estimated $86 million.

“We apologize for the confusion,” Mega Millions said.

The jackpot was not hit. It’s unclear if anyone had a ticket that matched all the white ball numbers and the incorrectly read gold Mega Ball.

The official results for the drawing were white balls 15, 19, 20, 61, and 70, plus the Mega Ball 9.

Mega Millions pays out smaller prizes, as low as $2, involving a correct Mega Ball number on a player’s ticket. CNN reported that New York State paid out several thousands of dollars due to the error in the May 10 drawing.

“Due to human error relating to the May 10, 2022 Mega Millions draw, the New York Lottery paid a total of $5,538 to players who presented tickets with the incorrect winning number to retailers before approximately 10 a.m. on May 11,” the organization said in a statement. “This payment was recouped automatically via a Lottery account for uncashed tickets. There is no impact on aid to education or taxpayer funds.”
