A man sitting at a poker table at a cardroom in Washington State went on a stabbing spree before leading police on a high-speed chase, authorities say.
According to a report from The Columbian, Scott Robert Harmier, 41, appeared in court Wednesday on suspicion of four counts of first-degree assault and one count of attempting to elude police. He’s being held on a $1.5 million bond as authorities believe he still threatens the community.
Harmier is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 28.
The Associated Press reported that all four victims are expected to survive, according to authorities. Harmier allegedly stabbed the victims “unprovoked.” It’s unclear what led up to the stabbings. It’s also unclear what stakes and game Harmier was playing.
“It is with great sadness that we share that on 12/12/2022 an unprovoked and surprise attack occurred at our casino involving our customers,” the cardroom, The Last Frontier Casino, said in a statement. “The suspect in question is in custody with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, and Sheriff’s Department is undertaking an active investigation into the matter. Any questions or information regarding this incident can be addressed to the Sheriff’s Department.”
“Human resources is available and researching counseling options for any staff members or guests that have been impacted by this event,” the cardroom added. “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all affected.”
The Last Frontier Casino is home to 15 poker tables.
Harmier allegedly used a hunting knife in the attack.
“Patrons and employees confronted the attacker, but he was able to make it to a car and fled, the sheriff’s office said,” the Associated Press reported. The subsequent high-speed chase reached speeds of 100 mph before the suspect was arrested.
According to the report: “Video from the casino showed a man sitting at a poker table before reaching down, grabbing something and then standing and stabbing the man next to him five times in the head and chest ‘without provocation or warning,’ the sheriff’s office said. Several people tried to intervene, but the man began swinging the knife at them and then stabbed a woman sitting at the same table, police said. The suspect chased another man into the parking lot and stabbed him when he fell, then drove off.”
