Swedish newspaper, The Local, yesterday reported that six men have been charged under Swedish gambling laws after they set up an illegal poker tournament involving 700 people.
It is claimed that the tournament players each paid €250 to join the tournament - organizers took €30 as a fee and the rest of the money went into the prize pool. The paper reports that the tournament was arranged in conjunction with a gaming company and took place in a conference center in the town of Grebbestad.
It quoted prosecutor Linn Scholander as saying, "This is one of the largest cases of its kind," and said the men will go on trial in Uddevalla, 80 kilometers north of Gothenburg, after police broke up their poker tournament last March. According to The Local, two of those charged work for the gaming company, another two are locally-based organizers, and the maximum prize money for the tournament was €50,000.
The trial is due to begin in November.
