Danny Tang Wins Fourth Triton Title Of 2023Hong Kong Resident Is Now In A Three-Way Tie For Second With Phil Ivey and Mikita Badziakouski On Triton's Title Leaderboard |

Danny Tang came into 2023 with zero Triton Poker titles to his name. The World Series of Poker bracelet winner from Hong Kong had come close a couple of times, including a runner-up finish in 2019 and another second-place showing in 2022. He finally broke through and secured his first win on the high-stakes-centric tour in March, taking down a $25,000 short deck event at the Triton Vietnam stop. It seems this breakthrough opened the floodgates, as Tang was gone on to earn three more Triton titles since then.
On Tuesday, Aug. 8 he secured his fourth win of the year, emerging victorious in the
2023 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London $60,000 eight-max no-limit hold’em event for $1.6 million. Tang is now tied with Phil Ivey and Mikita Badziakouski for second place on the Triton titles leaderboard, trailing only eight-time champion Jason Koon.
Tang now has nearly $18.7 million in lifetime tournament earnings, with nearly $10 million of that coming from his 21 in-the-money finishes in Triton events. In between his debut title in March and this recent victory, he took down a $50,000 no-limit hold’em turbo event and the $50,000 short deck main event at the Triton Cyprus festival for $1.3 million in combined prize money.
“I don’t know what to say, I really don’t know what to say,” Tang said in his post-victory interview with Triton commentator Ali Nejad. “I think I’ve played pretty much the same. I’ve maybe improved a bit, playing with these guys every day you’re going to improve. But I wouldn’t say my skill level has improved dramatically compared to six months ago.”
This event attracted 106 total entries, creating a final prize pool of $6,360,000 that was awarded to the top 17 finishers. Heavy hitters like Steve O’Dwyer (17th), two-time bracelet winner Nick Petrangelo (16th), two-time Triton champion Webster Lim (14th), Cary Katz (13th), three-time bracelet winner Yuri Dzivielevski (12th), bracelet winner Ben Heath (11th), recent Triton London main event winner Timothy Adams (10th), and 2017 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship winner Elior Sion (9th) cashed, but fell short of the official final table.
Lewis Spencer ran A-4 into the A-K of two-time Triton winner Matthias Eibinger to finish eighth ($213,000). Badziakouski soon followed, with his pocket kings being cracked by the A-K of Tang. The four-time champion on this tour earned $283,000 for his efforts, growing his career earnings to just shy of $45.5 million.
Sean Winter’s run in this event concluded when his last few blinds went in with Q-10, which was unable to outrun the K-9 of Eibinger. Winter took home $370,200 as the sixth-place finisher. Chun Keat Liu got all-in with A-9 suited facing the Q-10 of tang, who had shoved from the button. Tang made trip tens to win the pot, busting Chun in fifth place ($469,000).
Koon had been hanging around on a short stack for a while before eventually getting his last 11 big blinds in with A8 from the small blind. Tang woke up with AK in the big blind and called. An AQ4Q2 runout knocked Koon out a few spots shy of a record-extending ninth Triton title. The American poker pro earned $582,000 to bring his lifetime earnings to just shy of $50 million. He remains the fifth-ranked player on poker’s all-time money list.
Tang was way out in front as three-handed play began. Bruno Volkmann closed the gap a bit when his Q6 bested the AK of Eibinger, making a straight to send the Austrian packing in third place ($703,000).
Tang still held more than a 3:1 chip lead. It didn’t take long for the final hand of the tournament to arise. Tang limped in from the button with A5 and Volkmann checked holding 52. The board came down 733 and both players checked. The 4 on the turn and Volkmann bet just over a third pot. Tang called and the 2 completed the board. Volkmann checked and Tang made an overbet of 1,350,000 million into the pot of 1,300,000. Volkmann went into the tank before check-raising all-in for 5,175,000. Tang thought it over before making the call with his five-high straight. Volkmann showed the bluff and was eliminated in second place, earning his first live seven-figure payout ($1,080,000) for his runner-up showing in this event.
