The 2023 Australian Poker League Million $1,500 AUD ($968 USD) buy-in main event attracted a huge field of 2,496 entries, creating a final prize pool worth nearly $2.1 million when rendered in US dollars.
From that sea of players that turned out to Southport Sharks on Australia’s Gold Coast, only one could walk away as the champion. In the end, that turned out to be Sean Ooi of Malaysia.
For the win, Ooi secured $380,250 and 1,080 Card Player Player of the Year rankings points.
The 22-year-old told the APL’s Nicki Pickering, “I think it’s the best feeling ever. It’s going to be hard to top this.”

Josh Hutchins, who finished fifth in the 2022 World Poker Tour Australia, finished as the runner-up. He earned $241,641 for his efforts in this event, marking his second six-figure score of the past 12 months.
This main event was part of a 60-tournament schedule that attracted more than 20,000 entries, awarding nearly $6.6 million USD along the way.
