Later in life, the 10-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner said his time at the table kept his mind sharp and that more people his age should play.

Shirley Bernstein agrees. The 100-year-old great-grandmother from Boynton Beach, Florida, not only is a regular stock trader, but also loves to gamble and plays poker about three times a week.

The centenarian has been a card player for many years and told Today.com that she plays “with some guys she met at the place she lives.”

Secrets To A Long Life

Beyond playing poker, Bernstein watches her portfolio on a daily basis and has been active in the stock market for five decades. She does some day trading as well and researches companies and potential stock targets.

“That’s what keeps me going,” Bernstein told Today. “I watch the market every day. I don’t always trade, but it’s a very important part of my day … it has made my life very interesting.”

The great-grandmother, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, offers a few tips for living a long life. She never smoked and only drinks alcohol occasionally. Perhaps surprisingly, Bernstein has never exercised much. Like Brunson, a bit of poker also keeps her mind active.

Friends say the 100-year-old poker player has a great sense of humor. Finding a job she loves may have helped as well. Retirement didn’t come until into her 70s and she was married for 45 years.

“I spent most of my life as a working lady in addition to being married and a mother,” she added.

Another key to longevity might be some good genetics. Bernstein’s parents made it to their 90s and one of her grandfathers lived to be 104.
