The 2023 Mid-States Poker Tour Michigan State Poker Championship at FireKeepers Casino drew a massive turnout, with 2,883 entries blowing away the previous record field of 2,479 that was put up this May.

The sea of players that turned out to this $1,110 buy-in MSPT event saw the $1 million guarantee easily surpassed, with a final prize pool of $2,795,010 that was paid out among the top 297 finishers. After three starting flights and a final day of combined-field action, it was Wisconsin resident Travis Young who emerged victorious with the title and the top prize of $297,997.

“I’m pretty speechless, honestly. I basically just 10x’d my career earnings with just this one tournament so that’s pretty amazing," Young told MSPT reporters after coming out on top.“I really came into today with no expectations and ended up running really well and picking some good spots to make moves, which ended up paying off."

Prior to this tournament, Young’s top live tournament result was a runner-up finish in a $400 no-limit hold’em event at the 2019 World Series of Poker Circuit Potawatomi series for $14,433.

The final day of play began with 341 contenders remaining at 10:00 AM local time in Battle Creek, MI. By the time the final table was set later that night, Young had built a sizable lead with nearly three times as many chips as the next-largest stack.

Brad Sailor scored the first two knockouts, with 2019 MSPT Blackhawk champion Brian Hou managing the next pair of eliminations. The final five players then hashed out a deal based on ICM payouts, bringing the tournament to an end with Young earning the title and Hou finishing second. The top five all earned at least $153,928 as a part of the chop agreement.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
