Nick Barksdale has proven to be an elite-level closer so far on the live tournament circuit despite not being a professional poker player. The sales manager from Lincoln, Nebraska has recorded just 13 in-the-money finishes, yet has managed to come away with four titles, including two main event wins on the Mid-States Poker Tour in 2023. Barksdale took down the MSPT Bally’s Black Hawk main event in January for his first six-figure payday ($170,325). Just 279 days later, in early November, he once again battled his way to the winner’s circle, topping a field of 654 entries to emerge victorious in the MSPT Riverside main event for $129,740.

“It feels really good”, Barksdale told MSPT reporters after coming out on top. “It was a really tough final table that could have gone in any direction, but I was fortunate enough to walk away with a second title this year.

Barksdale now has more than $391,000 in career tournament earnings, with the vast majority of that coming from his pair of MSPT titles.

In addition to the hardware and the money, Barksdale was also awarded 840 Card Player Player of the Year points for his latest big win. When combined with the 912 he earned for his first MSPT win, Barksdale now has 1,752 total points, which is enough to move him to 236th place in the 2023 standings presented by Global Poker.

The strong turnout for the $1,110 main event at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort in Riverside, Iowa resulted in a final prize pool of $632,880. The top 72 finishers made the money, with five figures or more for the top nine.

Rob WazWaz recorded his 18th top-ten finish on the tour, placing third for $58,858. The MSPT Hall of Fame member has now cashed for more than $658,000 on the tour. Asa Snyder, who finished seventh in this same event last year, placed second for $79,099.

Here are the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
