Daniel Negreanu has always been known for his reads, having correctly called out opponents’ exact cards at times through the years. Those savvy instincts paid off again in the $250,000 Super High Roller event at the World Series of Poker over the weekend.

The action played out on PokerGO on day 2 with blinds at 50,000-100,000 and a 100,000 big blind ante. Negreanu came in for a minraise to 200,000 with ASpade Suit JDiamond Suit, Charles Hook called with 8Spade Suit 8Diamond Suit from the small blind and Santhosh Suvarna called from the big blind with QHeart Suit 9Club Suit.

Going to the flop, Negreanu had a 36.6% chance to win the hand, according to the Card Player Poker Odds Calculator. Hook stood at 32.8% and Suvarna was at 30.4%.

The flop came down AHeart Suit 8Heart Suit 4Club Suit. Hook checked his set of eights, and Suvarna followed behind. That brought a bet of 250,000 from Negreanu with his top pair.

Hook then made it 550,000, getting a fold from Suvarna, and Negreanu thought a bit before calling. The turn brought the ADiamond Suit, giving Negreanu trip aces, but Hook a full house. Hook bet 700,000 and Negreanu once again went in the tank a bit before making the call.

The 7Spade Suit fell on the river and Hook moved all in, putting Negreanu’s last 2.1 million at risk.

“You know I almost folded on the flop,” Negreanu said. “What is going on?”

With the pot at more than 5.3 million, Negreanu took a drink and assessed his options.

“Pocket eights all day, twice on Sunday,” he said, correctly calling out Hook’s hand before tossing in a time extension chip. After some more thought, the six-time bracelet winner slid his hand to the muck.

This was just the latest brilliant read by Negreanu. He’s been known for calling out opponents’ exact cards with many of these videos going viral, as seen in the hands below.

Despite the laydown, it’s been another tough run for Negreanu so far this summer with some bad luck and major coolers coming his way. He has eight cashes for almost $74,000, with his best finish coming in the $10,000 Dealers Choice Championship where he took 10th for $27,041, but he’s now in the red for $870,597 as of Sunday.

Negreanu went on to bust after firing two bullets in the tournament, which saw 75 entries for an $18.7 million prize pool. Hook went on to finish fifth for $1.3 million with Suvarna taking the win for $5.4 million and his second bracelet.
