Family members of a Scottish poker player found dead recently believe he may have been murdered. Darren Young, 32, had been staying in a high-end condo in Manila, Philippines, while playing online poker and also at local casinos.

His body was found on his bed in May and local coroners ruled his death came from double pneumonia. However, other local experts raised concerns about the cause of death according to the Scottish Sun.

“Darren was a great poker player,” his mother Jackie Bain told the newspaper. “He was doing really well and making a lot of money. He was staying in a luxury condo by himself. That’s where they found him on the bed. There were no signs of a struggle, but he had nothing with him. Darren had a pile of poker chips – they were gone. So were his watch, his wallet, his bank card and the local and British money he had with him. I think the fact he was doing so well may have brought him to the attention of the wrong people.”

Hours before his death, Bain said Young texted friends about meeting a couple, saying, “I think I’ve been drugged.” Family members later called police after not being able to get in touch with him.

Young had been traveling through to Thailand, China, Dubai, Pakistan, and Cambodia before landing in the Philippines. He’d been staying at the condo for just a few weeks before his death.

Young was the father of a five-year-old child and friends and family remember him as someone who was always willing to help others.

The UK’s Foreign Office is believed to be communicating with Philippines officials regarding the incident.

In related news, Irish police searched a park in Dublin in February hoping to find the remains of Icelandic poker player Jon Jonsson. Authorities believe the 41-year-old may have met with foul play after leaving a casino in the city in 2019.
