When it comes to collecting taxes on casino gaming, Pennsylvania led the pack in the U.S. with $2.3 billion in 2023. That total topped other popular gambling states with New York checking in at no. 2 with $2 billion, and the gambling mecca Nevada ranking third with $1.2 billion.

The Keystone State has numerous gaming options – from large casinos and small gaming parlors to online gambling and poker, sports betting, and lottery. That has all brought in significant revenue and Pennsylvania also features some of the highest gaming taxes in the country.

“Slots are taxed here at about 52% for the casinos,” Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board communications director Doug Harbach recently told WTAJ. “When you move to some other states like Vegas they are somewhere around 6 or 8%.”

Online gaming and mobile sports betting continue to play a bigger role in revenue in states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Michigan. For example, October iGaming revenue in New Jersey topped live casino gaming for the first time.

“That’s the fastest-growing segment,” Harbach said. “Most recently there were national records for iGaming revenue.”

Despite that growth online poker has lagged in recent months, showing little growth overall. And while mobile and online sports betting has grown to include 39 states including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, online gaming has caught on much more slowly.

There have been several states considering online gaming legalization in recent months, but those efforts have yet to bear fruit. In November, Missouri became the latest state to legalize sports wagering.
