The second-annual Simon Poker Day, held as part of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour, Dublin, attracted 162 players to Industries Hall, RDS, Dublin, on Saturday, Nov. 3, and is on track to break last year's €50,000 in donations for Dublin Simon's homeless projects.
The interim accounts show the following donations, to date:
This brings the total collected so far to €39,016 with an additional £2,120 as well as several significant donations still to bear fruit, including the EPT Monte Carlo and Irish Poker Championship seats and several corporate and individual pledges.
Players wishing to inquire about the preregistered seats should contact Padraig Parkinson.
All incidental expenses in the running of Simon Poker Day were picked up by the players and organizers, and no deductions have been made from the donations. Many of the tournament organizers, including The Jackpot Club, donated their wages for the day.
The event attracted players from across Ireland and the UK, as well as a few hardy Europeans.
The atmosphere was convivial, bordering on the giddy with one overly enthusiastic Italian buying-in a second time after busting before being spotted and disqualified, and one well-known local accidentally purchasing an over-priced snooker cue in the auction.
Last year's winner and former World Series of Poker main-event winner Noel Furlong was knocked out early while snooker legend Ken Doherty and former Irish international footballer Tony Cascarino both cashed.
Also making the money were Northern Irishman Hugh Gribben, who travelled from the UK to play in what was his first live tournament, former Irish Open winner Christy Smith, Mikael Younan from Sweden, Andrea Balla from Italy, Jeff Duvall, Rory Liffey, Simon Nowab, and Michael Codkin.
The winner was Waterford man Pat Storan, who won €10,690.
The organizers of the event would like to thank everyone who gave of their time and money to support Simon Poker Day.
