In a letter to congressional leaders dated Nov. 30, the National Association of Attorneys General expressed opposition to Rep. Barney Frank's bill, H.R.2046, which seeks to license and regulate Internet gambling in the United States.
The letter, signed by attorneys general from 43 states, recommends against rolling back the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Attorneys general from Nevada, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, and New York did not sign the letter.
Frank's bill, introduced into the House in April 2007, currenty has 45 co-sponsors. However, Frank has stated that the bill does not currently have enough support to advance in 2008. It is one of four bills introduced to the House this year related to Internet gambling.
A bill introducted by Nevada Democratic Representative Shelley Berkley that calls for a one-year study of internet gambling by the National Academy of Sciences has the most support to date. That bill, H.R. 2140, has 65 co-sponsors.
