The 2008 Borgata Winter Poker Open kicks off its first of 16 events today with a $300 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament. Last year there 13 events, with the first event of the series being a $500 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament. It attracted an impressive 1,370 players, which was only 47 players more than the previous year. In both 2006 and 2007, the first event featured the biggest field of the series, so if the trend follows the past two years, the first event this year should be huge.
The World Poker Tour $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event begins Jan. 27. Poker professional and high-stakes cash-game player John Hennigan was the winner last year and took home more than $1.6 million of the $5.53 million prize pool for besting a field of 571 players. Amateur Chuck Kelley snagged almost $850,000 for finishing as runner-up.
