Winning the Card Player Player of the Year race is a crowning achievement that is at the top of most professional poker players’ list of goals. The Player of the Year title means the player had an outstanding year playing in numerous tournaments. It means they won tons of cash by placing high in several big tourneys, most likely winning the respect of their peers along the way.

As the poker landscape has changed, Card Player has revised its scoring criteria for its Player of the Year race. The most recent changes were made mainly to include more foreign tournaments in the Player of the Year race.

Now, all preliminary events for the European Poker Tour, the Aussie Millions, the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, and the World Series of Poker Circuit events will count toward the race, as long as the buy-in is $300 or more and the event has 60 or more entrants.

Readers can view all of the upcoming tournaments that count toward the Player of the Year race by checking the CardPlayer.com tournament listings page or by checking in each issue of the magazine. Simply look for the black box with POY inside of it next to the listings of events within each tournament series.

Michael “Timex” McDonald is the current Player of the Year leader with 2,920 points. He has already made three final tables this year and recently vaulted himself to the top by winning the EPT Germany event a few days ago. Click here for the complete standings.

But the race usually is decided in December, not February, and by adding even more events that qualify for Player of the Year standings, it should tighten the race up considerably.
