€200,000 Overlay as Irish Open Enters Day 2

Locals Turn Out En Masse For Day 1B at Irish Open but Numbers Not Enough to Meet Guarantee

Day 1b at the PaddyPowerPoker.com €3 million-guaranteed Irish Open 2008 saw 364 entrants but, added to day 1a’s turnout of 303, this still wasn’t enough to make the guarantee. The overlay of just over €200,000 (conveniently and generously rounded up by the sponsor) was getting everyone excited and as the action ramped and the TV cameras began to roll in earnest 148 of yesterday’s runners progressed to join the 116 finishers from day 1a.

The day may have had had fewer big internationally recognisable names and more local players but it wasn’t wanting forConor Tate enters day 2 among chip leaders action. Nor was it wanting for female participation with the Ladies event attracting a sellout 146 runners.

In the main event Knut Rysstad made good progress early on in the day and got a massive fillip right at the end when he won a 66,000 pot.
Knut raised it up to 1,100 from late position, only for the button to push all-in for 6,500 total. The small blind Oliver Freitag with a massive 40,000 to his name called, putting Knut in a precarious spot. After taking off his oversized headphones and straightening his tie and waistcoat combo, he announced “all in”, at which point Freitag snap-called.

“Please not Aces, please not Aces” Rysstad said as he turned over KK. Freitag showed QQ while the button rolled over KQ. The board came AdAs2c3s6d. Rysstad now goes into day two third in chips.

Popular Mullingar player Sylvester Geoghegan wasn’t so lucky, getting eliminated from the tournament in the final level.  After a raise and a re-raise to 3500, Sylvester and his opponent got all the money in on a flop of 9c4d6. The cards were turned over, and Sylvester was in trouble with 10c10d vs JsJ. The turn and river bricked, and Sylvester was sent to the rail.
