SpadeClub Poker Winner: Anthony 'LukaBloom' CalciaRecent $5,000 Weekly Tournament Winner Speaks Out About SpadeClub |
|
Anthony “LukaBloom” Calcia, 52, of Massachusetts, is SpadeClub’s most recent $5,000 weekly event winner. Calcia’s SpadeClub screen name derived from his favorite singer/songwriter, Luka Bloom, of Ireland. He has been playing poker for more than 40 years and enjoys the opportunity SpadeClub gives him to branch out from his typical limit hold’em game to play no-limit hold’em tournaments without any risk. Card Player had the opportunity to sit down with Calcia to discuss what he thinks makes SpadeClub such an innovative poker community.
Card Player: How did you hear about SpadeClub?
Anthony “LukaBloom” Calcia: I learned about SpadeClub by reading about it in Card Player magazine. I thought it was a pretty innovative concept and was anxious to try it. I applaud Card Player for creating a forum for players to compete without having to be concerned with the current legal issues.
CP: How long have you been playing poker?
AC: I’ve been playing poker since I was about 11 years old. I got started playing for pennies around the kitchen table at my grandmother’s house. It was an after-Sunday-dinner tradition for years. I’ve been playing hold’em since my early 20s, long before the current popularity.
CP: Do you consider yourself a recreational, amateur, or professional poker player? Do you think SpadeClub is a good learning ground for people who are looking to start playing?
AC: I am strictly a recreational player. I think it’s a great learning ground. Even for players like me that have played for years, it gives a good opportunity to practice the game.
CP: What’s the most money you’ve ever won in a poker tournament?
AC: I won approximately $3,800 in a tournament at Foxwoods.
CP: What do you think of the format for the tournaments on SpadeClub? What event do you look forward to most?
AC: I like the format; I have enjoyed it very much. I look forward to the weekly $5K and monthly $40K.
CP: Speaking of the $5,000 weekly event, you recently won one. Was there a particularly key hand that you played in the tournament that helped lead you to victory?
AC: Yes. I saw a flop from the big blind with K-8 and flopped a king. On the river, the chip leader at the time, with more than 300,000, went all in. They had just lost a tough hand, and I sensed weakness and made the call. They had 7-2, so that was a fortuitous call on my part.
CP: Do you have any plans for the money you just won?
AC: I plan on cashing out soon and using the money to add to my bankroll for my trip to Las Vegas this April.
CP: What advice can you give to other SpadeClub members looking to go deep in these tournaments?
AC: [Practice] patience and use the advantage of position. Learn from the experience and take advantage of all of the features.
