Technology news website, ITWeb, has reported that South Africa’s national Parliament has “parked” the National Gambling Amendment Bill in order to further scrutinize the issues surrounding advertising online gambling.
The Bill, which was introduced by Parliament in 2007, was recently amended by the National Council of Provinces to outlaw the advertising of online gaming. It aims to regulate online gaming activities which are currently illegal in South Africa which only allows gambling in land-based casinos, bingo halls, and on horse racing.
Gambling in South Africa generated a turnover of R13.5 billion (€1.1 billion) in 2006/07.
The Department of Trade and Industry, which sponsored the Bill, says it would be illegal to ban online gaming advertising.
