Day 3 at the World Series of Poker in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas saw the final table of the $10,000 World Championship Pot-Limit Hold’Em tournament as well as day 1b of the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’Em event.
Patrik Antonius, from Finland, was on a quest to win his first bracelet but fell short, coming seventh for $124,080 in the $10,000 World Championship Pot-Limit Hold’Em tournament.
Antonius endured a topsy-turvey existence at the final table, starting as he did, as the short stack with 230,000 in chips. Kathy Liebert doubled through the Fin with A-A versus K-K then he got mixed up in a hand for his remaining chips. He opened a pot for 140,000. Nenad Medic made the call from the small blind, as did Liebert in the big blind. The flop rolled out A10Q and Medic checked.
Liebert bet 40,000 and Antonius made an all-in call for his final 25,000. Medic also called and the side pot was pushed to one side of the table. The 4 fell on the turn and Medic checked. Liebert moved all in and Medic mucked. It was now down to Liebert and Antonius and they turned up their cards. Liebert flipped up A4 for two pair, and Antonius showed down pocket tens for a set. The 7 fell on the river and Antonius tripled up to survive once again.
His respite was short-lived. He raised a pot 120,000 and Andy Bloch reraised it pot to 360,000. Antonius moved all in and Bloch made the call. Bloch turned up A4 and Antonius showed down K10 . The board rolled out 99575 and Antonius was eliminated.
The event was eventually won by Nenad Medic who beat Andy Bloch heads-up to take down the $794,112 in prize money.
The rest of the Amazon room was filled with day 1b no-limit hold’em hopefuls. A total of 3,929 entrants meant the top 378 finishers in this event will make the money. Each player is guaranteed at least $2,949, while first place will receive $831,462 for the win.
Irishman Andy Black got off to a good start limping under the gun and the button raised to 300. Black called and the flop came K97. Black checked and the button bet 600. Black check-raised the player all in and the player called with JQ and was behind Black's 1010. The board didn't improve and Black eliminated the player.
Despite his early spin-up Black was eliminated before the end of play.
Spaniard Carlos Mortensen got active early losing most of his stack with top pair against aces. In the next hand he pushed his remaining 1,500 chips into the pot pre-flop and found himself up against two players. He won the side pot with just king high and limped on but it was not enough to propel him into a comfort zone and towards day 2.
John Phan used his large chip stack to finally put an end to Mortensen's evening, after Mortensen lost the bulk of his chips shortly after the dinner break. The former World Champion went all-in with king-queen, up against the A-T of Phan, and Phan hit an ace on the flop that clinched the victory.
Today sees day 2 of the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’Em tournament with 474 players returning to play down to the final table and day 1 of the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’Em event as well as the start of the $5,000 Mixed Hold’Em event.
