Denys “Winndealer” Danley, winner of SpadeClub’s Profile Completion Tournament, was recently awarded his prize, a WPT Boot Camp seat of his choosing. Danley works as a casino dealer in Winnemucca, Nevada, and has been playing poker for two years. After watching poker tournaments on ESPN, he became interested in the game, but finishing sixth in his first live poker tournament is what got him addicted. Danley recently sat down with Card Player to talk about his win.
Card Player: How did you hear about SpadeClub?
Denys “Winndealer” Danley: A guy I work with subscribes to Card Player magazine, and I saw it in there and thought I would give it a try.
CP: Do you have a story behind you screen name?
DD: Well, I am a dealer at a casino in Winnemucca, and Winn is short for Winnemucca.
CP: How did you get started playing poker?
DD: I saw some poker tournaments on ESPN, such as the World Series, and thought it looked like fun, so I decided to give it a try.
CP: Do you consider yourself a recreational, amateur, or professional poker player?
DD: I would say I am an amateur.
CP: What are some of your other poker accomplishments?
DD: We have a weekly employee tournament where I work, and last year I participated in the Tournament of Champions and won. I received $400, which was really helpful, considering it was around Christmas time.
CP: Do you think SpadeClub is a good learning ground for people who are looking to start playing?
DD: Yes! I think the hand helper and the odds calculator are great tools for beginners.
CP: Was there a particularly key hand you played in the tournament that helped lead you to victory?
DD: Yes, when there was three of us left and I had pocket sixes, there was a lady who had pocket fours and another guy who had pocket eights. I thought I was beat until I hit a six on the river and I won with trip sixes.
CP: What do you think of the format for the tournaments on SpadeClub?
DD: Oh, I love them.
CP: Do you play live or just online?
DD: Well, this is a small town, so we only have two poker tables. So, the employee tournaments I play in are about all the live poker tournaments I play right now.
CP: Have you participated in any of the community features on SpadeClub? What do you think?
DD: Oh, I like them. I haven’t really written any blogs or anything, but I do enjoy reading them. I like to chat during the games, and I actually met a lady from Mississippi whose username is “gogogal.”
CP: What do you think sets great players apart from merely good players?
DD: A great player can lay down pocket aces when he knows he’s beat, and good players sometimes won’t.
CP: What was your first poker experience like?
DD: I was really nervous [laughs]. I played in a poker tournament in Elko, Nevada. It was the first time I had ever played live, and I was really nervous. I didn’t end up winning, but there were three tables, and I made it to the final table. I ended up finishing sixth, and I was hooked from then on.
CP: Do you know which WPT Boot Camp you will be attending?
DD: I would like to attend the two-day tournament camp at the end of September in Las Vegas, Nevada, taught by Clonie Gowen.
