The winner of a charity poker event sponsored by the Poker Players Alliance that will take place in Denver this week during the Democratic National Convention will not win a seat into the 2009 World Series of Poker main event as previously announced.

“Poker at the Ballpark” will still take place Tuesday, Aug. 26, but in order to comply with state law, the tournament cannot award prizes that depend on order of finish. Instead, a raffle will take place wherein the prizes intended to be won in the tourney will be randomly handed out to players who compete in the tourney. That includes a $10,000 seat into the 2009 WSOP main event. Proceeds will benefit Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Ben Affleck already made headlines on People Magazine’s website because he’ll be at the event, joining Andy Bloch, Barry Greenstein, and colleagues Seth Meyers, Paul Rudd, and Sarah Silverman.

Individual players can register for $500, and two sponsorship opportunities are available: The Full House sponsorship costs $3,500 and gives the buyer four entries, two spectator seats during the tourney, one ticket to the VIP reception, admission to the general reception, and recognition on all event materials and signage. The Royal Flush sponsorship costs $7,500 and gives the buyer eight entries, four spectator seats, two tickets to the VIP reception, and recognition on all event materials and signage.

Colorado has several casinos that spread poker, and the state has strict rules concerning betting amounts and tournament buy-ins. Tournaments with buy-ins of more than $500 cannot be run in the state unless satellited into.
