PokerStars Sunday Million
The PokerStars Sunday Million tournament had its first overlay in at least two years (possibly ever) this Labor Day weekend when just 7,212 entrants bought in. The tournament, which now has a guarantee of $1.5 million, had been close to requiring an overlay for the previous two weeks, with a prize pool of $1,530,200 on Aug. 17 and $1,511,400 on Aug. 24. Last night’s prize pool of $1.5 million was reached by virtue of a $57,600 overlay on the part of PokerStars.
Regardless, the winner of the event would walk away with almost $185,000 if no deal was made at the final table. When it got down to heads-up play in the event, it was TheRodGuy versus diegoaiz for the lion’s share of the cash. Diegoaiz felted his final opponent to snag the top prize in the tournament.
The final results were:
Full Tilt $750,000 Guarantee
The Full Tilt $750,000 also had an overlay last night when 3,225 entrants put up the buy-in for the event, and it was huge — $105,000. That overlay accounted for 14 percent of the total prize pool, or 79 percent of the first-place prize ($132,788).
It came down to Steveee111 and oldschool043 for the single six-figure payday in the event. The runner-up would leave the table with $80,250, which represented an almost $53,000 difference in payouts between first and second place. Steveee111 ultimately closed out the tournament, securing the nearly $133,000 first-place prize.
The final results were:
UltimateBet $200,000 Guarantee
There was also, as expected, an overlay in the UltimateBet $200,000-guaranteed event. The 758 entrants in the tournament generated $151,600 for the prize pool, leaving UltimateBet to pick up the $48,400 tab. While the overlay was smaller than the ones at PokerStars and Full Tilt, it was proportionately much larger; the overlay accounted for more than 24 percent of the prize pool.
Like with the other tournaments on Sunday, it was the entrants who benefited. A guaranteed $200,000 and fewer entrants meant that the first-place prize would be larger than normal at $46,000. Online poker pro Mark “dipthr0ng” Herm (pictured at left), who has been having a fantastic few months, went deep in the event, making it to three-handed play with negativeROI and maug13. Dipthr0ng went out in third ($18,500), and that left maug13 and negativeROI gunning for the title. Maug13 earned that title when he eliminated negativeROI to take the first-place prize. Despite not winning, negativeROI’s $28,000 take for second place likely makes his name a misnomer.
The final results were:
Bodog $100,000 Guarantee
Bodog’s marquee tournament, the $100,000 guarantee, had the lowest overlay of the four flagship tournaments in this recap, but it was proportionately the largest, by far. The event had 558 entrants, which meant that Bodog put $44,200 into the prize pool out of pocket to match the guarantee. That equated to, of course, 44 percent of the prize pool and covered the first- and second-place paydays with $4,200 left over.
As with UltimateBet, the constant prize pool and smaller-than-normal field meant that those who did get paid got paid more generously. The first-place prize was $25,000 instead of the normal $23,600. Once 556 other players had been sent to the rail, Dahotshot went toe to toe against alethia for the biggest payday of the event. Dahotshot took the final shot and raked in the last pot to earn the $25,000 prize.
