Book release parties usually take place at fancy restaurants or in upscale book stores, but poker authors celebrate in different ways.
Card Player columnist and author John Vorhaus is celebrating the launch of his latest poker novel, Under the Gun, at Hollywood Park Casino Sunday, Sept. 7, with the JV Celebrational, a $120 no-limit hold’em tourney wherein the first 100 entrants receive a copy of the book.
Annie Duke — with whom Vorhaus co-authored the book Decide to Play Great Poker, which comes out in 2009 — will also be there.
A bounty will be placed on Vorhaus, and free food will be served. Concerning the bounty, Vorhaus says, “Anyone who’s ever played against me knows that, as a poker player, I’m a pretty good writer.”
According to a press release, “Under the Gun combines high-level poker instruction with a page-turning tale of murder, intrigue, cheats, deceits, and a hundred-pound dog. On a non-stop thrill ride through the soft underbelly of Las Vegas, the novel takes the reader literally from poker’s basic “what beats what?” all the way to the pinnacle of top tournament play, as it tells the story of Hal Harris, an earnest young striver who’s never played poker before in his life.”
Vorhaus is the author of eight poker books, including the must-have Killer Poker series. He also has written two crucial books on writing, The Comic Toolbox and Creativity Rules!. He can be found playing poker in and around Los Angeles, where he makes his home.
