The 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) continued last night with two new events, both with $300 buy-ins and $300,000 guarantees. The first event was a pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better event, and the final event of the night was a six-handed mixed hold’em tournament. Read the event recaps below to find out who the winners were, and check out the entire WCOOP schedule and results list on CardPlayer.com.
WCOOP Event No. 11: $300 Pot-Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better
The biggest event of the night, possibly surprisingly, was not the mixed hold’em event but the pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better event, further illustrating the growing popularity of Omaha worldwide. The event had 1,733 entrants, which meant a prize pool of $519,900, blowing its $300,000 guarantee completely out of the water. The prize pool left more than $88,000 on the table for the first-place finisher.
The appropriately named online poker pro Mark “The Omaholic” Roland made the final table of the event, eventually busting in fifth place ($36,000). Astarisborn went up against 92848 for the top prize, and, with no deal being made, the full $88,000 was on the line, a pay-jump of almost $22,000. The title eventually went to 92848 when he scooped the final pot, earning the biggest chunk of change in the event and the WCOOP winner’s bracelet.
The final results were:
WCOOP Event No. 12: $300 Six-Handed Mixed Hold’em
The six-handed mixed hold’em event may have had fewer entrants than the pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better event — despite having the same guarantee and buy-in — but it still had a very respectably big field at 1,496, to generate a prize pool of $448,800. The first-place finisher could snag as much as $73,600 for a win in the event, along with the gold WCOOP bracelet.
The final two players in the runner for that bracelet were no slouches, either. Aaron “011180” Kanter (pictured below right) went up against Randy “Randers” Haddox (pictured left) for the glory. The two decided to chop up some of the glory, however, when they made a deal that guaranteed 011180 $61,459 as the chip leader and Randers an even $60,000, and $6,000 was left for the ultimate winner, per the PokerStars chopping rules.
Randers pulled into the chip lead after the deal was struck, and the final hand came about in an unusual fashion. After some preflop aggression, the flop came out 8 7 4. Randers pushed all in, having 011180 covered, and 011180 called, showing A 5 for ace high with a gutshot-straight draw. Randers turned over A 6 for a barely better ace and a mutually blocked gutshot-straight draw. The turn brought an ace, giving plenty of outs for a chop, but the river bricked out with a deuce, giving Randers the final pot with his six kicker. Randers collected a total of $66,000 and a WCOOP bracelet for winning the event.
The final results were:
* Payout reflects a two-way deal made at the final table with $6,000 left on the table for the winner, per the PokerStars chopping rules.
