The BoylePoker.com International Poker Open 2008 was won last weekend in dramatic fashion by Irishman Ruairi Coy who lifted the title and €37,530 after beating French challenger Max Decorne at 5.30 a.m. on Monday morning just two hours before he was due in work.International poker Open 2008 champion Ruairi Coy

The event set a new attendance record for a field outside of the U.S. with 1,300 players from 17 countries taking part in the €135 + €15 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament at the Recency Airport Hotel in Dublin. The prize pool swelled to €205,000 with €32,000 added by BoylePoker.com

Coy said after his win, “What an incredible event, I just can’t believe I won it. Playing against the likes of legends like Padraig Parkinson and Marty Smyth was a dream come true but to beat 1,300 players is out of this world. I can’t believe I have to go to work now. I hope they give me the day off!”

The final table of nine echoed the international flavour of the event which saw a huge pan-European turnout including 430 French players:

Seat 1: Maxence Decorne (France) -- 635,000
Seat 2: Malika Pater (Netherlands) -- 1,475,000
Seat 3: Elie Payan (France) -- 1,270,000
Seat 4: Peter Murphy (Ireland) -- 590,000
Seat 5: Jonathan Gelston (Ireland) -- 1,095,000
Seat 6: Ruairi Coy (Ireland) -- 2,385,000
Seat 7: Raymond Kerney (Ireland) -- 3,010,000
Seat 8: David Introligator (France) -- 705,000

Heads-up Coy soared into a comfortable chip lead with 10.7 million of the 13 million chips in play and confidently moved all in with A-7 and was called by his opponents K-8. His ace stayed ahead ensuring the title stayed on home turf for another year.

Paul Spillane, head of poker at BoylePoker.com said Coy was aq worthy champion. "Beating the biggest event field of players outside America is a unique achievement and one he’ll be able to enjoy forever. The success of the event was down to the hard work of the huge team involved and to the players who really got into the spirit of the tournament. So, a sincere thanks to all of them and we’re already looking forward to next year.”

The event attracted some of the biggest names in European poker including Andy Black, Neil Channing, Ian Frazer, Mad Marty Wilson, and BoylePoker pros Marty Smyth and Padraig Parkinson.
