The 2009 Borgata Winter Open tournament series kicks off on Jan. 13 at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and it ends on Jan. 29 with the conclusion of a five-day no-limit hold'em championship event. The championship event buy-in has been reduced from the usual $10,000 to a $3,000+$200 freezeout featuring 50,000 in starting chips, 75-minute levels, and a guaranteed prize pool worth $2 million. The decision to reduce the buy-in of the championship event came about when the Borgata and World Poker Tour decided to split ways in late November. This came after a run of nine WPT events that had awarded millions in prize money hosted at the marquee Atlantic City destination.

Gavin GriffinHere is a look at the past champions of the Borgata Winter Open:

2006 Borgata Winter Open -- Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi
2007 Borgata Winter Open -- John Hennigan
2008 Borgata Winter Open -- Gavin Griffin

Other events that highlight the preliminary schedule in 2009 include pot-limit Omaha, seven-card stud, limit hold'em, and even a special H.O.S.E. event for those wishing to participate in mixed games. The series will also feature second-chance tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $150 to $200, as well as a survivor-style tournament, where all of the winners receive the same amount of prize money, similar to a satellite.
