Jason “alig8trblood” Zeller is thrilled that he has won a Bellagio Championship Series monthly qualifier and can’t wait to go to Las Vegas and play in the satellite to the 2009 Five-Star World Poker Classic at Bellagio. He is determined to make a name for himself in Vegas. Zeller loves to play on SpadeClub and is grateful for the opportunity to qualify to play among some of poker’s most elite pros.
When asked what he thinks about SpadeClub, Zeller responded, “It’s the best poker site out there, if you ask me. You have to give very little, and SpadeClub returns much, much more. You risk no money at the tables, but don’t get me wrong, the level of play is to not be underestimated. There is some real talent on this site. I told all of my friends about it.”
Card Player was able to ask Zeller a few questions about how he started playing poker and where his game is today.
Card Player: First off, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Jason “alig8trblood” Zeller: My name is Jason T. Zeller, I am 31 years old and poker dominates my life along with my family. I stumbled upon poker five years or so ago and have never looked back.
CP: Do you play live or just online? If so where?
JZ: I play live when I can, but our local casino doesn’t even have a poker room, which is crazy to me. I play a live cash game weekly with some friends and also play a live tournament weekly. For the most part, I mainly play on SpadeClub.
CP: What was your first poker experience like?
JZ: [Laughs] It was hilarious, actually. My sister Jill taught me how to play, and I broke even that night. I was folding on a check to me, because I had no clue what "check" even meant. I started playing online for play chips and learned the fundamentals that way.
CP: What was the most important thing that you did to get your game to where it is today?
JZ: I ate, drank, and slept poker. I would play 24/7 if I could, ask anyone who knows me. I never want to quit playing. Also, if it wasn’t for my fiancé Cindy, I don’t think most guys in my position would get to play with the freedom that I do.
CP: What is the one thing that you wish you knew about earlier in your poker career?
JZ: Power of position.
CP: What do you think is the key to success when a tournament gets down to heads-up poker?
JZ: Aggression and position. You need to play every hand like you flopped a missile, and raise from the button, "gosh darnit."
CP: What are some of your other poker accomplishments?
JZ: Well, I played my first big tournament, which had about 70 players, about a year after I learned to play, and I placed first. I won a local heads-up tournament a friend hosted and placed third the following year. I have final tabled SpadeClub's $5,000 weekly and the late $40,000 Mega Monthly tournament after only being on the site for three months, and how can I forget the Bellagio Championship Series monthly qualifier first-place finish? Woohoo!
CP: What do you think sets great players apart from merely good players?
JZ: To be great, I think you have to want it really badly, it’s like a hunger. I want it, and I am hungry like Rocky Balboa getting ready to fight Apollo Creed. I’m playing poker in meat lockers and drinking raw eggs for breakfast.
CP: Did you meet anyone interesting at the tables to add to your friends list?
JZ: Oh yes. Clutchfan, Chilyrooster, AndrewB, and Hitur2outer have been really supportive, and they crack me up at the tables.
CP: What is your next goal on SpadeClub? How do you plan to accomplish it?
JZ: My goal is to win the Bellagio Championship Series finals in April. I must train like Bruce Lee.
CP: Do you have any general advice to share with our readers about succeeding at SpadeClub?
JZ: You have to want to win, and you really need to have passion for the game. If you find yourself getting bored, try to keep your patience; you have to have discipline. Also, if you’re not a member, what are you waiting for?
CP: Are you excited to be playing in the satellite for the 2009 Five-Star World Poker Classic at Bellagio in Las Vegas?
JZ: [Laughs] My fiancé asked me what I wanted for dinner, and I said "Bellagio and meatballs." I won’t sleep for months. This is my chance to make a name for myself, and I must succeed.
CP: What will be your strategy going into the Bellagio Championship Series finals in 2009 on SpadeClub?
JZ: Hopefully I just get pimp-slapped by the deck and never have to make a decision. Mainly patience, to be quite honest.
CP: Anything else you would like to add?
JZ: If I didn’t see SpadeClub’s ad in Card Player magazine, who knows how long I would have waited for a chance like this? I really can’t describe how I feel, because it really seems like my dream is coming to life. Oh, and I would like to play SCKenny heads up!
