SpadeClub’s first $30,000 Mega Monthly event of its second year brought with it nearly 2,500 entrants. Besting the field and securing $5,600 for his first-place finish was Dan “plumnuts57” Collinsworth. This is Collinsworth’s first tournament cash ever, and he is excited it could be in the Mega Monthly event on SpadeClub.
Card Player sat down with Collinsworth to discuss his recent win on SpadeClub.com.
Card Player: First off, can you tell me a little bit about your life outside of poker?
Dan “plumnuts57” Collinsworth: I'm really into dirt race cars; I design and build dirt modifieds, and drive some. I have a great girlfriend who encourages my playing, which is nice. I have four great kids and three grand children.
CP: How long have you been playing poker?
DC: Actually, I got started around last October; I was watching the WSOP on TV and decided to try it out.
CP: Do you have a story behind you screen name?
DC: I thought of the best hand you can have, and that's the nuts, I put plum in front, and 57 is the year I was born. It's a crazy name, but I play a little conservatively.
CP: Do you consider yourself a recreational, amateur, or professional poker player?
DC: More recreational, but I couldn't think of anything better to do for living.
CP: Is there a professional poker player you look up to most? If so, why?
DC: Not really, I try to learn from them all.
CP: You took down SpadeClub’s largest Mega Monthly tournament field so far of 2,498 players, how does that make you feel, and how did you do it?
DC: Wow, what a feeling to win this tournament. This was my first tournament cashing in, when I made it to $5, I was excited, but to win it was unreal! I was in awe and amazement. I worked hard at staying focused, and only played good hands, and sometimes only very good hands. Really, I just chipped away at it all night, never really being a front-runner, almost going out a few times, but I never gave up.
CP: The Mega Monthly event you just won lasted nearly nine hours. How did you keep your focus on the game?
DC: That was the hard part. About seven hours in, my girl made me some hot coffee, and that helped quite a bit.
CP: What mistakes do you see players making most often in poker tournaments of this size?
DC: I would say risking too much too early in the tournament. Players who are playing too loose will go out sooner or later. You have to be there at the end if you want to have a chance at winning it all.
CP: Who was your toughest opponent in the event and why? What aspects of their games made them tough to play against?
DC: Not one person in particular. Every hand was tough, and my opponents were fighting as hard to win as I was. Trying to get a good read on each player is no easy task.
CP: Do you have any general advice for our readers who wish to succeed on SpadeClub?
DC: I would suggest going to the book store and buying a good book from one of the pros, and when you play, get serious and learn what works for you.
CP: Do you have anything else you would like to add?
DC: I would like to thank all of those who continued watching the game after they were out, and all of those who congratulated me afterwards in e-mails. Good luck to you all. I look forward to playing with you again here on SpadeClub.
